Chapter 11: A Night with Circe

“What would you like to do?” Circe asked. We were alone in her room.

I didn’t answer at first, too taken in by what I saw. “The paintings on your walls,” I said. “I’ve never seen anything like them before. The colors are... I’m at a loss for words.” The colors actually changed shades in the light, as if the objects were real.

“That’s the Irene Sea, from Trivane,” Circe said, looking over at the painting. “You should know it from your dreams.”

“They named the sea after Irene?”

“Not quite. Irene took her present name from the sea. It was her favorite spot when she lived there. Now it’s a dust bowl. We all miss Trivane.”

“In my dreams I remembered it as the Orange Ocean.”

“Yeah, you have quite the imagination. And that painting shows the Triluna.”

She was pointing to a painting of the three moons over Trivane. The moons glittered in beautiful life-like colors while the waves seemed to wash up on the shore of the Irene Sea.

“I thought Mars only had two moons,” I said.

“It does now,” she replied, with a sigh. “Millions of years ago, I can’t be specific, one of the asteroids in what you call the Asteroid Belt, collided with one of the moons. It is now part of the belt.” She looked sad, and I decided not to press her any further.

I looked over at the bed, draped with a canopy of shimmering blue fabric. The bed covering was the color of deep water, like a pool under a waterfall. I walked over to it and slid my hand over its surface. It felt very smooth to the touch and cool, but was not wet. I pulled back suddenly when my fingers seemed to disappear into it.

Circe chuckled. “It’s jacka, from a plant on Loton. Loton is a world in the Alpha Centauri system. It’s made of a special grass grown in the fields of Waazzii, near the star LHS 292. The grass is super soft; it feels like floating on air. We can burrow down into it and be supported but not feel at all constrained. Come on, dive into the pool.”

“Dive into the pool?”

“The jacka will actually part when you jump on it, like water. That’s why your fingers were disappearing into it. It’s like being in water without getting wet. You’ll love it. Turn your head.”

I did, and I could sense Circe wriggling out of her clothes.

“Okay, it’s your turn,” she said from behind me. I turned and saw just her head sticking up from the surface of the bed. It was like she was in a pool.

I just stood there. The prospect of disrobing in front of this girl who possessed a perfectly shaped body was unnerving.

“You need to stop being so timid around me,” Circe laughed. “I won’t bite you. If you’d prefer, go in my bathroom and change. There is a pair of shorts there for you to wear to bed.” She was still reading my mind.

The bed had a padded step running the length of it on both sides and at its base.
